Nitrous Sedation

Relaxation Options for Dental Patients

At Sanford Dental Excellence, we focus on patient experience and place comfort at the top of the priority list, along with exceptional care. Providing different options for sedation ensures we can meet our patients’ preferences when it comes to feeling relaxed. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option for all ages, and many adults find this to be an ideal solution. Administering this medication in a controlled environment ensures patients remain comfortable without receiving too much or too little.

Why Is It Called Laughing Gas?

Nitrous oxide is a gas administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose and inhaled naturally, like oxygen. It’s commonly called laughing gas because of the euphoric state it puts patients in as the sedative quickly goes into effect. Patients will experience reduced anxiety and increased immunity to discomfort within minutes as the gas is absorbed into the bloodstream. We administer the medication in a controlled environment and can immediately increase or decrease the amount.

Benefits of Nitrous Sedation

Fast Acting

The effects of nitrous oxide sedation can be felt immediately, meaning we can start the dental work without delay.

Controlled Doses

We have complete control over the dosage received. We can tell when the correct amount is provided by monitoring the patient.

Safety

Nitrous oxide has been widely used as a safe sedation method because of the very few if any, side effects associated with it.

Easily Reversed

As quickly as nitrous oxide can be felt, it can also be reversed quickly, ensuring patients don’t have a long recovery.

Is Nitrous Oxide Right for Me?

When visiting us for dental care, finding the right sedation option is essential to each patient's physical comfort and emotional well-being. We will work closely with you to determine which form of sedation will best meet your needs. While it is accepted as a very safe form of sedation, there are certain medical conditions, such as respiratory illnesses and pregnancy, that might require a different option than nitrous oxide. Patient safety is always top of mind for us.
